At Katen Consulting we are committed to helping our community. Some of the ways in which we accomplish this goal are to volunteer our time, knowledge, and experience.
Since 2003, we have produced and hosted a television series across Westchester County, NY and New York City called Enhance Your Chance®: A Guide to Maximizing Your Possibilities." Episode topics include: Effective Resume Writing, Understanding the Job Market and Being an Effective Manager, among many others.
This skill-building series discusses some of the most essential skills needed to make a positive impression in the workplace. It also endeavors to help answer some of the most pressing issues that face prospective job applicants as they embark on the job search.
(2005/2006) Season III Highlights
Episode 1: Effective Resume Writing (guest: Anne-Marie Ditta)
Bio:
Anne-Marie Ditta is certified both as a resume writer and career coach. As president of First Impression Career Services, LLC, a private career coaching practice, she helps gifted students and promising graduates develop the necessary job search and career management skills needed to succeed in the workplace.
Anne-Marie is the first Vice-President of the National Resume Writers Association, a non-profit member-driven organization dedicated to promoting high standards in resume writing and career coaching. She is also an active member of Career Masters Institute and the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches.
A leader in the field of resume writing, Ms. Ditta has been published in a number of best selling books including the third edition of Designing the Perfect Resume, Cover Letter Magic - 2nd Edition, 101 Best Resumes for Graduates, and 202 Great Resumes and Expert Resumes for Health Care Careers.
In November 2001, Anne-Marie raised the standards for resumes written by employment specialists in community based organizations, when she introduced New Concepts in resume writing to the Training and Employment Council of Brooklyn. She is currently the regional representative for the Westchester Chapter of Networking for Professionals, a monthly networking group that meets in Tarrytown.
Episode 2: Understanding the Job Market (guest: Frank Surdey)
Bio:
Frank Surdey was appointed Regional Administrator for the State Labor Department's Division of Employment Services in the Hudson Valley in September 2002. The Division, with 10 office locations throughout the region, provides labor exchange services, maintains a Talent Bank/Job Bank, and provides a variety of business services including recruitment, job fairs and HR consulting.
From 1991-2002, Mr. Surdey managed operations for the Department's Research Division ion the seven-county Hudson Valley region and had statewide economic development responsibilities. The Research Division is recognized as the primary source of labor market information in New York State.
Mr. Surdey also managed Research Division operations in the Mohawk Valley and North County regions and served as a labor market analyst in the Southern tier.
Frank Surdey Began his career with the State Labor Department soon after receiving a B.S. in Business Economics from the State University of NY, College at Oneonta in 1976.
Episode 4: Being an Effective Manager (guest: Harry Horowitz)
Bio:
Harry Horowitz is the Director of the Professional Development Center at
Westchester Community College. Mr. Horowitz has been involved in the
field of training and development for the past 11 years. He has worked
in training for Mercury Interactive, SPL Worldgroup and Canon USA.
As a
Captain in the Israel Air Force, Mr. Horowitz served in the IAF Center
for Technical English Studies and as an integration officer in the
Materiel Directorate. He has a Bachelors Degree from the University
of Massachusetts and a Masters in Organizational Psychology from
Columbia University.
Mr. Horowitz began in his position as the Director
of the PDC in November, 2004.
The PDC is an arm of Westchester Community College that is dedicated to
providing Westchester's individuals and organizations with the highest
quality of professional development services. Offering both public
courses and customized training, the PDC has a client list that
represents small, mid-size, and large businesses throughout Westchester.
Mr. Horowitz, was raised in Westchester County, and currently lives in New York City.
Episode 6: Transferable Skills in the Job Market (guest: Assemblyman George Latimer)
Bio:
Assemblyman George Latimer is serving in his first term,
representing the Westchester communities of Larchmont, Mamaroneck Town
and Village, Rye City, Port Chester, Rye Brook and part of New Rochelle.
Latimer, 51, possesses a varied career in business and in public
service, serving in his 18th year in public office.
The Assemblyman resides in the City of Rye in Westchester County, since
1982. He is a third-generation Westchester native, born November 22,
1953 in Mount Vernon to the late Stanley and Loretta (Miner) Latimer; a
graduate of the Mt. Vernon public schools, Latimer holds a B.A. from
Fordham University and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from
New York University's Wagner School. By profession, he is a marketing
executive with over 20 years of experience working with major
corporations including Nestle, AT&T, ITT, IBM and the former Shearson
Lehman.
Assemblyman Latimer has served in elected public office for nearly two decades,
including one four-year term on the Rye City Council (1988-1991) and
seven two-year terms as Westchester County Legislator (1992-2004). From
1998 to 2001, he served as Chairman of the Westchester County Board of
Legislators, the first Democrat to hold that position. He was elected
to a two-year term as Westchester County Democratic Chairman, from 2002
to 2004.
In public office, George Latimer has established an enviable record of
accomplishment sponsoring legislation and funding for environmental
issues (including protection of Long Island Sound), housing,
transportation, healthcare, lowering property taxes and a myriad of
other issues. He has received public recognition and awards from
numerous Westchester and Hudson Valley organizations for his work in
these areas. He is an active volunteer in his home community in Rye.
